While we do not require an MPC code, we strongly encourage it. The procedure to obtain an assigned “MPC code” (Minor Planet Center observer’s code) requires observing “a number of low-numbered minor planets each on pairs of nearby nights” for asteroids numbered between 40 and 40000 (not too bright; not too faint). The MPC recommends starting with main belt asteroids. This is a good step before attempting some of the faint, fast-moving asteroids on the Target Asteroids! list.
