Site Sandpiper’s Craters

This image shows a portion of the larger crater in which sample site Sandpiper is located on asteroid Bennu. Shadowing from the crater’s ridge can be seen in the upper right of the image. A smaller crater, encompassed by the larger crater, is also visible in the upper right. The sample site is located just above the large, light-colored boulder in the lower right of the image. The image was taken by the PolyCam camera on NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft on April 11, 2019, from a distance of 3 miles (4.7 km). The field of view is 214 ft (65.3 m). The image was obtained during Flyby 6A of the mission’s Detailed Survey: Baseball Diamond phase. When the image was taken, the spacecraft was over the southern hemisphere, pointing PolyCam south and to the east.
