Word of the Week: Ground Truth
The use of data collected by close observation to better interpret data that has been inferred or collected remotely.
Once OSIRIS-REx has studied Bennu up close and has retrieved a sample from the asteroid’s surface, scientists will be able to compare the data collected by the spacecraft to telescopic observations of the asteroid made from Earth. This ground truthing process will allow scientists to better understand the meaning of telescopic studies of other asteroids.
